Some of my best memories come from the passenger seat of an old pickup truck, windows down, dust trailing behind us on the gravel roads of southeast Kansas. Every summer growing up, I’d ride along with my great-grandpa — Merle “Mooch” McColm — as we hauled scrap metal and old junk from barns, fields, and small-town backyards.
We’d stop for gas-station sodas, wave to folks we knew in nearly every county, and spend long afternoons loading up what most people wanted gone. Mooch was the kind of man who didn’t need to say much — he just showed up, did the work, and treated everyone with respect. He was honest, dependable, and always had time for people. Even after a long haul, he’d find time to take me fishing at the strip pits before the day was done.
Those summers shaped who I am — and how I work. Mooch didn’t just teach me how to haul junk. He taught me how to show up for people.
How Mooch’s Junk Removal Got Started
Fast forward to today: I’ve got a busy life of my own — career, kids, marriage. My wife’s been on me (lovingly) for years to clear out the garage, attic, and shed. At some point, it hit me — this wasn’t just a chore. It was something I loved doing. Clearing space, helping people breathe a little easier — it reminded me of those days with Mooch.
So I decided to build something of my own. Something grounded in those same values I learned as a kid: hard work, showing up on time, and treating people right. That’s how Mooch’s Junk Removal was born. I put his name on the truck because this business is his legacy, too.
